A town with roots in fishing, as it emerged in the
1930s. It has grown around the sluice and the town
expanded rapidly but is limited by the narrow
peninsula with the sea on one side and the fjord on
the other. Besides fishing, which is no longer the
main industry in the town, there are two shipyards
located in the town.
HVIDE SANDE / Region Midtjylland
ca. 2800 indbyggere / Einwohner / inhebitants
The shipyard “Vestværftet” builds new fishing vessels
for many countries beyond Denmark, and fishing trawlers today are large and provide good conditions for the
crew who will operate them. Additionally, Hvide Sande
Shipyard, Steel & Service (HSSS) is located on the island
between the bridge and the lock, which built wooden
ships for fishing until 1990 when the strategy shifted
to focus on ferries and workboats, historic vessels and
service ships for example in the wind turbine industry.
Many sailing ships, both new and old, come here for
maintenance – the frigate that is docked in Tivoli in Copenhagen comes from here, just like a similar one that
is located in a theme park in Japan.
The houseboats from HSSS can be seen in both Bork
and Hvide Sande. The wind turbine industry/energy
companies are also represented in the town by Vattenfall at the northern part of the harbor, such as AS Scan
– one of Denmark's leading companies in the design
and production of mechanical/hydraulic equipment
for the offshore, oil/gas industry, and marine sector.
