Ringkøbing Fjord was once a sea bay, but land-tongues,
that grew from the south and especially north with the
wind, gradually closed tightly and over time there have
been different outlets/passages between the fjord and
the sea - however, weather and wind have always determined where it should be and around 1800 the passage
was just outside Nymindegab. In this process, “Tipperne”
was formed in the middle of the fjord – which today and
for many years has been a resting place for countless
migratory birds. It is property of the state and as early as
1898, conservation regulations were introduced for the
rich bird life on the peninsula together with a major protection of the fjord and designated as a Ramsar area, i.e.
an internationally important area for waterbirds according to EU directives. It is usually closed to the public, with
a few exceptions.

Nymindegab was at that time one of the most important
fishing ports on the West Coast south of the Limfjord.
But the gap – or the passage sanded up and they began
to dig a canal, which also regularly became sanded up.
In 1904, Nymindegab was described as follows: located
by the Nyminde stream, with Customs Assistant-, rescue,
emergency signal, and State Telephone Station, grocery
store, inn, and ferry landing with a crossing to Holmsland
Dune. It was not until 1929-30 that the current canal was
constructed in Hvide Sande, thereby relocating the sea
fishing, rescue station, customs department, etc. there.
