BLÅVAND / Region Midtjylland
ca. 2.900 indbyggere / Einwohner / inhebitants
The locality Blåvand initially consisted only of the area between the point where Blåvand Ligthouse lies – as a part of
Oksby Parish, which also included places such as: Sdr., Nr.,
and Ø. Oksby and Vandflod, Midtby, Hvidbjerg, Grønbjerg and
Tane all now Blåvand. The city cannot be dated as such, as it
has arisen over time, but the name Blåvand itself first appears
in 1664 as Blaauande, meaning “the dark watyer”. It has developedwith fishing and agriculture until tourism took over in
the late 19th century and the place became very well-known
at Blåvandshuk Lighthouse in 1900 at Denmark’s westernmost point.
In 1914 Blåvand Radio was established, which for many years was
the only connection to ships sailing in the North Sea – both small
cutters and larger cargo ships. The radio's task was, among other
things, to pick up emergency signals and coordinate the rescue
services at sea. Then to process telegrams and conversations
between crew and relatives/companies ashore.
