FLUGT Refugee Museum of Denmark s. 65
A small, cozy railway town, but with a lot of activity, as the army combat school and Oksbøl Barracks
are located just outside the town, and the largest
of the German refugee cemeteries is located at the
edge of the forest. From 1945 to 1949, there was a
German refugee camp here with 36,000 German
refugees, which probably shows one of the less
pleasant sides of Denmark and its attitude towards
the Germans who escaped from Germany with
their lives intact.
Many Germans still visit their ancestors' graves in
Denmark, and in 2022, “FLUGT” was inaugurated
– a museum dedicated to the 250,000 refugees after
WWII, but also to all refugees around the world. It is a
museum that conveys the universal issues, feelings,
and nuances that arise when a person is fleeing.
It is a Danish/German collaboration and the first international refugee museum, built by one of Denmark's
most famous architects, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG),
around and in the last building from the old camp –
the infirmary – with a video tour in the area that the
entire camp occupied. So, in addition to the violent
history of people in real trouble, walking around this
exceptional building is a visually stunning experience.
