It is difficult to say how old the town is, but it
appears in old writings as early as 1107 – it was
called something like Warwarth, which meant
ford, because the river was much larger and
more navigable at that time. So, the first houses
were probably built because of shipping on the
river and the town's subsequent importance
as a trading center. At that time, the town was
the residence of the chief of Vardesyssel, which
was an even older system of division of the
country than the later districts and even later
counties, and the town had a real royal estate,
Vardehus, with two fortifications. These have
since disappeared, but that can tell us something about how the country was organized at
that time.

Proof of the town's former importance as a trading
center is that it belonged to the group of seven
market towns in Jutland that were allowed to
trade with foreign countries and have their own
mayor and town council. It was not until the 18th
century that these rights were lost.
