Piet Hein – Ægget / Das Ei / The Egg
Skjern Enge is a large nature area with fantastic
wildlife and also a good and significant example
of nature restoration. In the 1960s, a major land
reclamation project was carried out in the area,
where 4,000 hectares of meadows and wetlands
were converted into agricultural land, which was
in short supply. However, this turned out to be a
minor disaster for the area, as large quantities of
ochre and other substances were now being discharged into Ringkøbing Fjord. Therefore, in 1987,
it was decided to return the river to its original and
restore the nature of the valley. In 1999, the largest
nature restoration project in Northern Europe and
Danish history at that time was launched. It was a
great success, to the delight and benefit of many.
Here is one of Denmark's best handball teams,
which also plays internationally – just like one of
Denmark's most versatile artists Piet Hein, who
was a poet and scientist too – had a design studio
here, where several of his iconic works were developed. Today, both The Kiss and The Egg can be
seen in two of the roundabouts.
