RINGKØBING / Region Midtjylland
ca. 10.000 indbyggere / Einwohner / inhebitants
An old trading town dating back to before
1400 – one of the market towns that had special rules for local farmers, who were allowed
to sell their goods in the town square – as
well as other privileges.
Ringkøbing is a charming old town with cobbled streets and is often called the town with
the red roofs, due to the special architecture
of the Plesner houses – architect Ulrik Plesner,
born in Vedersø – designed distinctive buildings in Denmark – in the late 1800s and early
1900s – including Johannes Larsen's House in
Kerteminde, Asmild Kloster Agricultural School
in Viborg, Esbjerg Post Office, Klitgården, and
Hotel Plesner in Skagen. In Ringkøbing, the
buildings feature red bricks, white cornices,
and hipped gables, while in Skagen, the buildings are yellow but feature the same cornices
and white markings.
Helge Johannesen is part of the eight-man strong
night watchmen team. He enjoys spending his
summer nights walking the old cobblestone streets,
telling stories about life as a night watchman to the
visitors to this market town.
